Granite is a great choice of material for any kitchen design; it is beautiful, durable and functional. Granite Countertops are also an investment, they are a higher priced material that adds to the value of your home and is cut custom to fit your unique layout and design. You need to be wary of the quality of granite you are selecting and how it is going to be installed in your home.

There are three things to consider when looking at quality of granite;

The slab itself

Fabrication

Installation

Granite Slab

The quality of the granite slab can be evaluated by looking for a few telltale signs of a weak slab or a slab that may crack warp or twist over time. Some of these can be hard to identify for the untrained eye. Your builder or designer should be able to help you spot potential, problems. For the most accurate results make sure you are examining the granite under good lighting.

Look for hairline cracks in the granite this is a definite indication of a weak slab.

Look for pits every slab has them, a higher quality slab has very little pitting and the pits are smaller, and filled. The methods for filling pits vary as well as quality of filler. Your designer can help you identify a poorly filled pit before you purchase.

Check thickness throughout the slab measure the thickness of the slab every 8 to 10 inches to gauge variation in thickness, a good slab will have little to no variation in thickness.

If the slab is already polished try scratching the surface with the edge of a coin if it scratches your dealing with a slab that has been sprayed with a wax polish, this polish is weak and will continue to scratch over the life of the slab.

Shine, look down the slab at eye level and check for any variances in the level of shine across the material, a good slab will have an even continuous sheen.

Fabrication

Inspection- the granite is inspected for any unusual condition and the buyer is notified of any potential issues. The issues need to be considered before the slab is cut while there are still options.

They will also hand finish the edges and color match them to the top of the granite. If edges are not hand finished, you will be able to see small vertical lines along the edge of the countertop left by machinery.

Layout- Before any cuts are made your base kitchen cabinets should be installed, leveled and a template should be made to fit your kitchen design precisely. Your designer or builder should identify the best place for necessary seams and help you identify which part of your slab you want to highlight and where you want to be placed.

Support your supplier should also identify necessary support for overhangs at the time of template and notify your designer or builder if any additional support is needed.

Finish the slab completely including overhangs this makes for a comfortable surface and a professional finished look.

Install

Ask your designer or builder to refer a good installer, some designers and builders provide their own contractors, and sometimes the supplier also performs the install. Make sure your installer follows these guidelines.

Another thing to consider is who is liable for any damage done to your granite if it becomes damaged during install. If you buy through a kitchen design or build company and have entered a contract the company would be liable. If you buy it independently you may or may not be covered, make sure you clarify this before moving forward with a granite purchase.

Install steel rods around all cutouts. Steel Rods are installed on the underside of the granite it is a technique used to create a structurally sound opening in the stone for cooktops, sinks, etc. to prevent cracking.

When installing an undermount sink the fabricator should use steel brackets or sink setters instead of relying on epoxy or silicone alone to hold the sink in place otherwise you run the risk of your sink falling off.

Seams between stone pieces should be 1/8” with a tolerance of +/- a 1/16th of an inch, anything larger is distracting and anything thinner does not provide a strong enough bond between pieces.

The top should fit tight to the wall and all adjoining permanent vertical surfaces any gap should not exceed 3/16th of an inch.

Edges should be caulked to prevent moisture and food particles from collecting and to hold the stone in place.

Granite should be completely dry before sealing and sealed with a minimum 15 year sealer.

A good installation team will also be courteous and keep your space clean, they should tape your drawer guides during the install to keep dust out, protect your cabinetry and clean up the jobsite after your countertop install is complete. A good countertop install can make or break a kitchen remodel, make sure you are putting your investment in the hands of kitchen remodeling experts.

When remodeling your kitchen you are investing in your home and quality of life.
Countertops are one of the biggest decisions in a kitchen next to your kitchen cabinetry. Most of our clients have granite at the top of their list. They usually ask if there are other options to consider for a couple of reasons.

Most people think they should avoid granite because they believe that it is hard to maintain. This is not true; granite is a tough material with a rating of 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. The only things harder than granite are diamonds, sapphires and topaz. Granite is sealed the moment it is installed; some sealers boast a 15 year warranty. And you don’t need fancy cleaner, just mild dish soap and water. Granite is a beautiful material that has a long life and natural shine that won’t dull.

The other misconception about granite is that it is expensive. Granite can be expensive depending on which species you are interested in. Surprisingly in most cases a common group I or II granite often beats other alternative solid surface materials in price.

If you simply don’t like the look of granite consider what you do like in terms of color, sheen, pattern, manmade vs. natural, recycled or reclaimed or a specific look you are trying to achieve. Bring these ideas to your designer from there it will be simple to pin point a surface that meets your needs although it may not offer the same value in terms of durability and budget.

In this market most of our clients are concerned with resale value (as they should be) and their budget. So when clients are looking for a counter top surface they want three things.

Luxury Perception (LP) Materials that are viewed as high quality attractive surfaces.

That includes

(This list comes from our clients)

Granite

Marble

Quartz

Concrete

And sometimes wood butcher block. (Walnut looks gorgeous)

There are many other beautiful finishes that they do not even want to consider.

Functionality

Granite and Quartz countertops offer great functionality. They are long-life products that are;

Durable

Heat resistance

Easy to maintain – YES they are BOTH incredibly easy to maintain

Value

In this market Granite offers the most value of the products in the LP product list. Granite is imported in ever increasing quantities see http://www.stonebusiness.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1512&Itemid=2. With increased volumes, as you might expect, prices have dropped. Also labor prices are down right now. And guess what, lower granite prices + lower labor prices = lower countertop prices. Now don’t get me wrong granite is not cheap and it shouldn’t be, but it costs less than the other LP products. Also you have to be very careful when pricing granite because it is not a value if the quality is low – so you ask “how do I evaluate the quality of granite” but that would be a whole other blog article.

With the world around us slowly disappearing, it is our job to insure that we live a somewhat sustainable life so the next generation will be able to enjoy the world’s resources as well. KC Cabinetry is conscious of the depleting resources, and aims to use as many products that are of recycled material as possible.

PaperStone, a new countertop material, is one of these products that we offer. Made of 100% post consumer recycled paper, PaperStone was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council under the U.S. Department of Energy. Adding this product to your home or building can increase your LEED rating, which is a voluntary standard for developing environmentally responsible, low emission, high-performance, sustainable buildings.

Located in Grays Harbor, Washington, PaperStone is committed to sustainability and community. This means that the employees, environment, and community of Grays Harbor are treated fairly. PaperStone believes “that economic and environmental health is ultimately interdependent.” They also only partner with other business that share such beliefs

After soaking sheets of paper PetroFree™ phenolic resins, a completely renewable, environmentally responsible product, natural pigments are added. The final countertops are made by placing a certain number of paper sheets together and placing them in a press that binds them together with pressure and heat. It is non-porous, preventing bacteria from entering the countertop and growing, giving it a “food safe” rating from the NSF, the public health and safety company. No radon gases are emitted and it is completely VOC-free. Not only is it safe, but its density and rigidness make it extremely durable, enough to not only be used in countertops, but furniture, backsplashes, and other products as well.

Of course, one may think that this product is beyond their reach, however, this is not so. PaperStone commits itself on creating affordable countertops. If the full sized PaperStone is too expensive, there is an option of the built-up edge, which is half the weight and half the cost of the normal Paper Stone. To add extra peace of mind, PaperStone comes with a lifetime Residential Warranty, as long as it is installed by a certified Paperstone fabricator, such as KC Cabinetry.

It is often used in kitchen designs because it can accommodate high traffic areas and looks great with wood cabinets.

This woods durability not only comes from its extreme hardness and density, but also from the amount of tannin in it, which is a chemical that repels insects and fungi. Oak is also extremely easy to install, which adds to its durability.

Oak is produced in two colors, red and white. Red oak has a pinkish tinge to it, while the white variation is slightly brown. What makes oak considerably distinct is the rays that grace the grain of the wood. Each cut creates a different pattern on the wood, though red oak’s rays are more distinct and white oak’s rays are longer. Depending on the cut, the grain can be tight or have tiger-like stripes.

Finish takes very well to oak, and most companies stain the wood in order to give it a darker coloring. Both species are used in traditional settings, and can take on the wear and tear of a busy household.

Oak is an affordable flooring choice for any remodeling project. Does oak sound like the type of floor for you? Come in to KC Cabinetry today!

When designing your bathroom, a huge decision to make is the bathtub. For the master bathroom, this is often a key feature that makes or breaks the room. There are many factors that should be taken into consideration.

In terms of style, there is the typical alcove tub, where the three sides of the tub are connected to the surrounding walls with only one side showing. This is most the most typical style and is usually the least decorated. It is usually connected to the shower.

Some bathtubs are “dropped in” to the frame or floor depending on one’s preference. If the tub is on the floor, getting in is extremely easy, but getting out can be dangerous. That is why many tubs like these have a frame built for them to be dropped in. While they are very beautiful and add a great flair to the bathroom, there is an extra cost due to the carpentry and plumbing issues that must be addressed when installing.

A free standing soaking tub

Soaking tubs are used for exactly what they sound like: soaking. These deep tubs can be installed in any way, and are perfect after a long day at the office. However, they are separate from the shower.

Tubs can be installed in the corner, called corner tubs. They are much bigger than ordinary tubs and set off the room. They can be placed against a wall or can stand alone. Depending on the installation, some tubs cannot be connected with the shower.

Freestanding tubs used to be the norm in all American homes, but now they are considered unique and add a bit of flair to the bathroom. The feet can be ball or claw, or if you prefer, has a flat bottom. It should be noted that the pipes are exposed, but this doesn’t take away from the beauty of the tub.

There are many materials that tubs can be made out of. The most popular is porcelain on steel. It is reasonably priced and extremely resistant to corrosion and acid. However, if the porcelain chips off, rust can form. Acrylic tubs are easy to clean and extremly durable, but it can scratch and become discolored over time. This material is very afordable. Fiberglass is the cheapest of the materials, and while it is very beautiful, it wears easily. Thankfully, fiberglass repairs are not costly. Cast iron tubs are significantly more expensive, but for good reason. The way the tub is made makes it highly resistant to chips, scratches, corrosion, acid, and age. Ceramic tubs are the most expensive, but they are a truly custom tub that allows one to create a beautiful design on the tub. However, this work is extremely tricky, and extra precaution must be taken in while making this tub to insure there are no leaks.

While this all may seem over-whelming, the designers here at KC Cabinetry are here to help! Come in or call today to discuss creating a bathroom that is as unique as you are.

There are many different types of wood styles, such as Beech and Cherry. Once you choose the type of wood you would like for your kitchen cabinets, the next question you may ask is “What door style should I use?”

Thankfully, KC Cabinetry is here to help! Here is a list of cabinet door styles. Check them out and see which one is right for you!

Flat Panel Doors:

These doors have a flat panel, but that doesn’t mean that they are boring! They can a number of fantastic designs, even if their panel is flat. They can have a arched panel or a straight panel, but it has a divot between the frame and the panel.

Shaker Doors:

These doors are of a beautiful, simple design. It is a square door, with no profile (if looked at from the side, there would be no rised panels) and a single panel. It is a type of flat panel door (see above). This style is perfect for modern and sleek kitchens.

Raised Panel Doors:

These doors are exactly what they sound like. The middle pannel is raised, and usually used in traditional kitchens. This beautiful style allows for a number of elegant designs, and a glaze finish can highlight these details.

Continuing our work with “Different Wood Species,” our new addition is German, or European, Beech.

This beautiful white wood is native to Western Europe, hence its name. However, it also grows in Western Asia as well. It is usually a pale cream or light brown, though when it is steamed (to relieve drying stress) it turns into a pinkish-red color. It has a fine, short grain that makes it easy to work with. Nails, varnish, dyes, and glue work very well with this wood. Its finish is always smooth. Used to mimic other expensive looking woods, as its light color allows for many different finishes. European Beech has a intermediate hardness, making it applicable for everyday use.

Here are some photos of KC Cabinetry’s work with Beech cabinets. Come in today if you would like to add this beautiful wood to your home!

In many of our previous posts, we’ve discussed the need to treat certain stone countertops so they don’t produce mold in the pores. The question the one may ask after installing these countertops is what type of sealant should be used. Luckily, KC Cabinetry has that answer. When we install porous stone countertops, we usually use Dry-Treat, the world’s leading sealer.

Dry-Treat began in 1991 as a way to seal large slabs of concrete to protect it from harsh elements. As the years passed, their scientists developed sealants for a wide range of stone products, ranging from natural stone in the home, to bricks and pavement. These sealants are significantly different than regular sealants made of silicone or Teflon. The molecules in Dry-Treat are unique in that they penetrate deep into the stone and bind with the pores, but do not block them. By doing this, the stone is protected in a number of ways.

All objects have what is called surface energy, which simply means how much one thing wants to stick to another. Dry-Treat changes the surface energy of stone, so liquids such as water and oil are repelled. This protects the stone against damages and stains that water and oil can produce. This is due to the chemical make up of the sealant. Dry-Treat is made up of molecules that on one side repels water and oil, and on the other side attracts water. When the sealant is applied to the stone, the part that is attracted to water breaks off and leaves the other component of the molecule behind. This resulting strong molecule breaks the bonds between the stone and the oxygen and hydrogen molecules and takes their place. By changing the angle of which the water in the stone and the stone itself are attached, the sealant turns the countertop or tile floor from a surface that absorbs water to one that repels it, without changing its looks or breath-ability. Any water within the stone can easily evaporate out. These molecules are deeply impregnated into the stone, giving it extra protection. This protects it from stains, bacteria build up, destruction from salt, weathering, and traffic.

Dry-Treat is not only a good product, but it also has admirable qualities as a company as well. They employ fully qualified engineers to test and create new products, as well as offering warranties up to 20 years. They offer protection for dozens of stone materials, from granite to travertine to clay, and also cleaning materials that will keep the integrity of Dry-Treat intact.

Come in to KC Cabinetry today with any of your kitchen or bathroom renovation needs!

When one thinks of walnuts, the food is what most people are reminded of. However, in the kitchen renovation world, Walnut brings to mind either a dark, chocolate brown of its heartwood or the soft white sapwood, with dark streaks and swirls that add to its unique beauty.

Long ago, the walnut tree was thought to produce fertility, as its toxins prevented other trees from growing around it and therefore increased its own growth. The only dark wood native to North America, It has long been used for furniture, hardwood flooring, and cabinets, and for good reason. Not only is this beautiful, straight grained wood easy to work with, it also takes to finish extremely well. The darker wood is great when contrasted with lighter wood. When it is steamed, the wood comes out darker, which enhances the warmth it adds to any room. There can also be purple accents in this wood. The price for Walnut is usually moderate, which is always a plus. The darker color covers up any scratches or dings that may appear. This wood will definitely add value to your home.

However, this wood is not for everyone. As it is a softer wood, walnut floors should not be placed in areas of high traffic. If your home already has dark wood furniture, the colors could clash with the walnut. Come in to KC Cabinetry today and see how Walnut flooring can make your home as Unique as You Are.
